"Havets Sånger" Songs of the Sea
"Havets Sånger" was created collaboratively and consists of ten works of visual art and ten pieces of original music that work together to communicate a narrative. Swedish opera singer and classical composer, Simon Peterssn, wrote and performed the musical component of the project. During the Summer of 2013, Simon and I worked together in the South of Sweden to create collaboratively. Much of the work is inspired by the Swedish landscape which is evident in many pieces, though not onstensibly illustrative as allegory and metaphor play a strong role throughout the piece. Poetry accompanies the music and art which work togethet to convey memory and loss. Classically inspired, this body of work reads as a sort of modern-day operatic tragedy.
"Havets Sånger" debuted at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in 2014. The exhibition received critical praise as is presently on view at the Swedish American Museum in Chicago, Illinois. Simon and I self-published a book about our unique artistic process and detailing our experiences working bost interdisciplinary and internationally. The book has since sold over 200 copies in Sweden and in the USA.
